Heather Mills on Dancing on Ice

If you’ve been watching Dancing on Ice then you’ll have seen the exciting final last night with exuberant Hayley Tamaddon winning the trophy. But that’s not what I want to talk about; my interest lies in the appearance of Heather Mills.

I was really pleased to see the inclusion of someone with a disability on a mainstream dancing show – in case you don’t read the mags or watch TV, Heather has a prosthetic leg. And I thought it was refreshing to hear Heather talk about not only the difficulties she faced when skating, but also how she was able to skate on regardless into the 5th week.

Ok, Heather Mills isn’t exactly the most loved TV personality, and I know some have become irritated by her constant references to her disability. But hey, she has to live with it, and I personally admire her motives as she wants to encourage others with disabilities to get out there and get active.

With this in mind, I had a little nose on the web and have found a few sites that might be helpful for those budding ice skaters out there, no matter what your disability; National Ice Skating Association, National Ice Centre, SkatingForum, Dorset Orthopaedic (the company Heather Mills used to have skates specially fitted for her prosthetic legs).

If you know of any more accessible venues or equipment let me know as I’d love to add them to the list.
